I installed a new hard drive in my 2009 Macbook Pro 15. The previous one moved to an external enclosure. I do not own any installation discs for this laptop, yet I somehow need to get an operating system loaded. When I turn on the machine, it displays a white screen with a light-grey folder bearing a question mark, flashing. I have tried holding down keys to enter Disk Utility or Safe Mode, to no avail. Holding ‘option’ does remove the folder icon, and produce a cursor for the trackpad, yet no more than that. How do I get an OS on this hard drive?
How to Move Your Mac files to a Windows PC. Connect your external drive to your Mac, open the drive and select File. Select New Folder. Type Exported Files' and hit Return. Skip to Step.
Make sure your Mac is connected to the external storage device (for example, using a USB cable or over a network). Click the Finder icon in the Dock to open a Finder window, then do one of the following to move your files. Move files to the storage device: Select one or more files on the desktop or in a folder, then drag them to the storage device, listed below Locations in the Finder sidebar. You can move your home folder that takes up most of the space to another drive and this, in turn, frees up space on your Mac’s boot drive, preventing problems and space constraints. I’d recommend only using this method if you have an SSD and HDD that are internal drives such as a modified MacBook Pro or Mac Pro with multiple drives.
Is this a good question?

I have been having this issue as well, still working on figuring out a way to solve the white screen issue.
New Hard Drive Os Install
Your Mac’s hard drive can be cloned onto an SSD using just Disk Utility, yes, just Disk Utility, a utility module that comes default in your Mac’s OS X. That should allow you to breathe easy, now that you don’t have to worry about using suspicious third party software to get the job done. Steps to clone OS X to SSD on your Mac.
